Government First Grade Women’s College in Belagavi | Struggle for a Decadelong Wait | Hubballi News – Times of India

Belagavi: The Government First Grade Women’s College in Belagavi has been struggling to get its own building for the past 10 years. Due to lack of infrastructure, classes are being conducted temporarily in Sardar’s PU College building, that too in the afternoon. The authorities have been corresponding with the officials concerned for many years, but in vain.
In 2013-2014, a degree college for women was sanctioned in Belagavi. This college, which is affiliated to Akkamahadevi Women’s University, Vijayapura is facing a series of problems. The college does not have its own building even though it has been open for 10 years. The classes are held in the building of Government Sardar PU College. At present, the college has arts and commerce classes. PUC classes are held till 12.30pm and UG classes start after 12.30pm.
This year, more than 680 girl students from different parts of the Belagavi district have taken admission to BA and BCom courses. The most important demand of girl students coming to Belagavi from distant towns is that the college should have its own building as soon as possible to facilitate them.
The problem
Sandhya, a student who travels to this college from Hukkeri taluk said that if the classes start at noon, by the time the girls return home after classes, they face safety issues. It would be convenient if classes were held from morning to noon.
Sanjeev, a parent, said that various competitive exams including PUC exams are held at the college. Rooms are taken a day in advance for exam preparations. The students lament that this disturbs their classes.
The solution
Jyoti, a senior teacher at the college informed that the college has about 11 rooms for conducting classes. At least 16-18 rooms are needed, according to the academic schedule.
Principal Ramesh Mangalekar said that good facilities are necessary for the effective dissemination of education. “The college urgently needs a site building. We have appealed to officials of the city corporation and people’s representatives several times in this regard,” he added.
Asif (Raju) Saith, MLA, Belagavi North constituency said: “I have also received many complaints about the building problem and lack of facilities at the women’s college. A proposal has already been submitted to the government to provide a building for the college. I have spoken to higher education minister MC Sudhakar in this regard.”
“Following the demand, a search for at least two acres of land has been conducted. We have already inspected sites in many places including Ashok Nagar. The site will be finalised soon and we hope construction work for the college building will start in a month,”he stated.
