Salem: A patient who was under treatment at the Salem Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital died by suicide on Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as K Anandhan, 48, of Johnson Pettai in the city. He was working with a sofa repair unit in the city.
He was diagnosed with diabetes and had fallen ill after he sustained wounds to his legs.He could not go to work for the past few weeks. Anandhan was admitted to the hospital’s male ward and his brother Raja was staying with him. When Raja woke up around 7am, he found his brother dead, with blood oozing out of his throat. A blade was found in the hand of Anandhan. Raja alerted the doctors and nurses.
“Preliminary inquiry revealed that Anandhan’s wife Asha, 40, and their 13-year-old daughter had separated from him after a family feud, and he was upset over it,” said a police officer. The GH outpost police have registered a case and sent the body for a postmortem. Further investigation is on. TNN

Raja Kannappan gets Ponmudys portfolio after governors approval
Former minister K Ponmudy has been convicted and disqualified, resulting in the Tamil Nadu government assigning his portfolios to R S Raja Kannappan. The Madras high court sentenced Ponmudy to three years in prison and a fine of 50 lakh. Governor R N Ravi approved the chief minister’s recommendation to allocate the portfolios of higher education, technical education, electronics, science and technology to Raja Kannappan. Additionally, the portfolios of Khadi and Village Industries Board will be given to R Gandhi. The ruling DMK’s strength in the TN legislative assembly has decreased to 132. A by-election for the Tirukkoyilur assembly seat is expected to be held along with the general elections in May next year.
