Residents Protest Attack By Guest Workers | Coimbatore News – Times of India

Tirupur: More than 200 residents of Vettuvapalayam in Mangalam village panchayat staged a road roko on Saturday, seeking police action against a group of guest workers who assaulted them for opposing the panchayat president’s move to construct a road-level bridge adjacent to a graveyard in their locality.
According to an official source, Mangalam village panchayat president Moorthy had conducted a bhoomi puja for the bridge work more than a week ago.“More than 50 residents objected to the move, as the project will lead to waterlogging at the graveyard in future.”
On Friday, they met Moorthy and asked him to stop the work. Meanwhile, a verbal spat arose between them and a group of guest workers, who were working with a textile mill, fought with the villagers. Some of the villagers were admitted to the Palladam government hospital with injuries.
On Saturday morning, more than 200 residents staged the road roko, stating the village panchayat president had instigated the guest workers to attack the local residents. The Mangalam police, however, pacified them and registered a case against Paramasivam, a textile mill owner, and a few of the guest workers in the evening.
When contacted, Moorthy said he had been implementing various projects for the development of the villages in the panchayat. “But a section of people wanted to tarnish my image. Actually, the guest workers came to my rescue when the villagers pushed me down. We have lodged a complaint against a section of the villagers for assaulting me and others,” he said.
