Panaji: Social media users need to constantly fact-check information, especially forwards received over messaging platforms, said former chief digital officer of the City of New York, Sree Sreenivasan, even as he rued the proliferation of fake news and videos.
“With the general elections due to be held in India next year and in many parts of the world, it is important for social media users to exercise caution while circulating forwards,” he said.
While speaking on social and digital media trends at the International Centre Goa on Wednesday, Sreenivasan said mere numbers of a social media account is a misleading yardstick and is often inaccurate. “The number of followers a content creator has does not necessarily reflect high quality content,” he said.
According to him, social media should be about capturing moments, about trust, relationships, generosity and about people.
