SILCHAR: The rural belt — the areas dominated by Hmar, Khasi, Kuki and some other tribes including tea folks — as well as urban areas of Barak Valley and Dima Hasao in southern Assam wore a festive look on Christmas eve.
Several churches across the region were decked out on the occasion. In Silchar, Holy Cross Church at Sonai Road, 133-year-old Presbyterian Church at Jail Road, Baptist Church at Bungalow Road, Evenezer Baptist Church at Tarapur locality in the town were beaming with light works and festivity.
Many houses in Silchar belonging to different religious beliefs were also also decked up with Christmas trees and stars, which symbolise the ‘Star of Bethlehem’.
The terrains of Hmarkhawlien village in Cachar district bordering Manipur, which is dotted by pineapple gardens, is the largest concentration of Christians in this part of Assam. The villages, dominated by Hmar population, who are Baptist in belief, have also worn a festive look for the past many weeks.
The Baptist Church in Silchar, which commands the largest following in this valley, has organised several programmes like songs, cultural events apart from usual worship.
