Gurgaon: A 24-year-old Uber Green scooterist ferrying a rider home was crushed to death under the rear tyres of a private bus that rammed his two-wheeler from behind in a bid to overtake near Sheetla Mata temple on Friday night.
Ram Singh, the driver of the bus that transported employees of a private company in Manesar, was arrested from his house in Jhajjar on Sunday.
Around 8.30pm on Friday, Mantasha — who works at a salon in DLF-3 — had hailed an Uber Green ride to her home in Laxman Vihar. Upendra Kumar, who was ferrying her home on his electric scooter, had just reached the T-point near the temple when the bus crashed into the two-wheeler.
“I was riding pillion and was irritated by the bus blowing its horn repeatedly while trying to overtake us. We had reached near the Sheetla Mata temple junction when Upendra swerved his scooter towards the service lane. He had slowed down a little and the bus crashed into us from behind,” said Mantasha, who lodged a police complaint.
The collision sent the salon worker flying in the air. She landed on the pavement with a thud, injuring her right eye and hands.
Upendra and his scooter, however, got stuck under the bus and were dragged for a few metres. “Even after the rear wheels had crushed the biker’s head, the driver did not stop until passersby forced him to. He pulled Upendra and his scooter from under the bus and fled before anyone could lay their hands on him, leaving the bus behind,” Mantasha said in her complaint.
Passersby took Mantasha and a heavily bleeding Upendra to a hospital in Sector 5. By the time he was wheeled in, Upendra had succumbed to the head injuries. An autopsy was done after his family identified the body.
“We had sent a notice to the bus owner immediately after the accident. He helped us trace Ram Singh, who was driving the bus. We arrested him from his house,” sub-inspector Ishwar Kumar told TOI. An FIR was registered under sections 304A (death by negligence) and 279 (rash driving) of the IPC at Sector 5 police station.
