PANAJI: After a week of relentlessly scorching maximum temperatures hovering around 33.8 degrees celsius in Panaji, the mercury finally dipped, recording 29.8 degrees on Sunday morning. The minimum temperature on December 24 was one of the lowest compared to the temperatures of the past two days, especially from 5.30am to 8.00am, by a couple of degrees. The minimum temperature recorded on Sunday morning was 20.8°C in Panaji, which until two days ago stood at 22°C.
“The maximum difference between December 22 and 24 morning at the same time was evident. It looks as if the winter has set in Goa,” said meteorologist and retired National Institute of Oceanography scientist, M R Ramesh Kumar.
“The relative humidity also substantially dropped on Sunday afternoon as compared to December 22,” he added.
The recent drop in temperatures offered a semblance of relief from the oppressive heat. Despite this temporary reprieve, the quintessential wintry chill remained absent. As the day progressed, the temperatures soared yet again, recording a maximum of 34C on Sunday.
According to the India Meteorological Department, isolated pockets of haze and shallow fog are expected to intermittently shroud parts of the region on December 25.
“The Panaji station mean sea level pressure was relatively high, indicating fair weather throughout the day especially on Christmas,” Kumar said.
