Belagavi: A case of foeticide came to light on Sunday afternoon in Ghataprabha town of Gokak taluk in Belagavi district. Police said the foetus found in the gutter is of a seven-month-old male child. Some miscreants may have dumped the foetus in a plastic bag, in the drain at Kalal Galli late on Saturday night. As the news spread on Sunday afternoon, police visited the spot, and so did municipal and health department staff.Pro-Kannada organisations expressed outrage over the incident, while some people claim this must be a part of an abortion racket. They also urged police and health department officials to consider the case seriously and take strict action against the culprits. A case has been registered.
MLA seeks medical
college for V’nagara
Hosapete (Vijayanagara): MLA HR Gaviyappa has written a letter to medical education minister Sharan Prakash Patil demanding that a medical college be sanctioned for the Vijayanagara district. HR Gaviyappa mentioned that Vijayanagara is a newly formed district, a hub of tourist destinations and industries, where labourers and poor families live in mining-affected areas. He said that the existing district hospital at Hosapete is being upgraded from 250 to 400 beds and the sub-divisional hospital from 100 to 150 beds. Similarly, the mother-child hospital is being upgraded from 60 to 100 beds. A 50-bed emergency treatment unit has been sanctioned under the central government scheme and a 700-bed hospital is also being constructed at Hosapete. However, due to the lack of trained medicos in the district, the patients have to go to Ballari or Hubballi for advanced treatment.
Kannada convention in Karadaga on January 7
Belagavi: Kannada Balaga in DS Nadage PU College, Karadaga in Nippani taluk has organised a Kannada convention on January 7. Karadaga is a border village, where Marathi linguists have organised Marathi literary meetings annually for the past several decades. Author Sarjoo Katkar has been selected to chair the convention. According to Raju Khichade, honorary president of the convention, it’s the sixth Kannada convention being organised in Karadaga. The woman and child welfare minister Laxmi Hebbalkar will inaugurate the convention. Jain seer Kularatna Bhushan Muni Maharaj and many other seers of local mutts will grace the occasion.

Hubballi: The Following trains will be cancelled or partially cancelled due to four hours’ line block for safety-related works between the Kotturu–Hagaribomanahalli section. Train No. 06245 Hosapete–Harihar special commencing journey from Hosapete from December 25 to January 23 will be cancelled. Train No. 06246 Harihar–Hosapete special commencing journey from Harihar from December 26 to January 24 will be cancelled. Train No. 07395 Ballari–Davangere DEMU commencing journey from Ballari from December 25 to January 23 will be partially cancelled between Hosapete and Davangere. Train No. 07396 Davangere–Ballari DEMU commencing journey from Davangere from December 25 to January 23 will be partially cancelled between Davangere and Hosapete.
