AIZAWL: Mizoram home department officials on Sunday said the Centre is yet to provide humanitarian assistance to the internally displaced people of Manipur taking shelter in the state even after a lapse of seven months since the state government sought financial assistance for them.
The officials said the reported statement made by Union minister of state for external affairs, Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, is not true.Singh reportedly said, “Mizoram government has sought the help of Centre for the displaced people and a sum of Rs 10 crores was already provided to the government.”
A senior state home department official told TOI that the Centre has not sanctioned the amount to date.
“The ministry of home affairs had sought information about the requirements of the internally displaced people, in terms of food items like rice, dal, cooking oil and other needs like medicine. We had already submitted the detailed requirement for six months,” the official said.
The then chief minister, Zoramthanga, had on May 23 asked for financial assistance to the tune of Rs 10 crore as humanitarian assistance to the internally displaced persons of Manipur taking shelter in the state.
They are being provided food and other necessary items with the help of Rs 5-crore funds disbursed by the state government and Rs 81 lakh collected through donations from government employees.
According to police records, there are 11,319 Manipur internally displaced people taking shelter in Mizoram with 2,162 of them being lodged at 29 relief camps and 9,158 being staying with their relatives or families and also living in rented houses.
