Noida: Chief minister Yogi Adityanath asked students of Gautam Buddha University (GBU) to face problems and find solutions instead of running away from them.
“The primary reason for our failures is that we run away from problems. We should face them and find solutions,” Adityanath said during his address to GBU students on their conviction on Sunday.
The chief minister, who is also the GBU chancellor, referred to the life of Gautam Buddha and his teachings for a major part of his address.
“Buddha said we must accept our problems and find solutions to them. His life is exciting and inspiring as well. Like Buddha was a prince in a palace in his initial years, you are students in educational institutions. Colleges and universities can educate you. But behavioural knowledge will make you wise,” he said.
Adityanath also referred to the three refuges of Buddhism – Buddham saranam gacchami (I take refuge in Buddha), Dhammam saranam gacchami (I take refuge in Dharma) and Sangham saranam gacchami (I take refuge in Sangha).
“What is dharma (religion)? It’s not just rituals, but moral values and responsibilities of life. Rituals change with time, place and people. It’s not mandatory to follow a particular religion or ritual. Buddha has inspired us to follow the same path. ‘Buddham saranam gacchami’ implies enlightenment with conscience…. ‘Sangham saranam gacchami’ refers to teamwork, which is also the strength of a democracy,” he added.
The chief minister sought to draw parallels between Buddha’s enlightenment and the students’ life at GBU. “We are fortunate that India has the most number of youths in the world. And a majority of them are in Uttar Pradesh. Only the youth can bring in changes for the betterment of the nation,” he said.
Adityanath also lauded the social impact studies conducted by GBU students on the Noida airport. “This gave a unique experience not just to students, but the faculty too. The government is there for the university’s infrastructure. But it’s the society’s responsibility to make this a better place.”
Along with Adityanath, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar addressed the students. “Gautam Buddha University must come up to the level of Nalanda and Takshila universities,” he said, inviting the students to visit the new Parliament building.
On the convocation day, a total of 7,914 degrees were conferred on the students, eight of whom received the chancellor’s medal.
The last convocation at GBU was held in 2016 before Covid slammed the brakes on the annual event. The students who were given the degrees on Sunday were from the 2017 batch onwards.
Of them, 370 foreign students were handed certificates. A majority of them were from Vietnam (209) and Myanmar (120), enrolled for Buddhist studies over the years.
Doctorate degrees were conferred on 30 scholars from six countries, including Vietnam (14), Myanmar (9), Thailand (2), Yemen (3), Canada (1) and South Korea (1). Additionally, five foreigners were awarded by the CM and Vice-President.
Under the Mukhyamantri Internship Yojana, GBU signed four MoUs with companies such as Adverb Technologies, LG Electronics India Pvt Ltd, Dixon Technologies India limited and Minda Corporations Ltd.
