BHUBANESWAR: Resistance to unnatural sex was the motive behind last week’s brutal murder of a Class VII student in Cuttack, commissionerate police said on Monday after arresting the alleged killer, Jogendra Panda, 25, who is an acquaintance of the deceased. Police said Panda slit the 12-year-old boy’s throat multiple times with a sickle when the minor resisted the accused’s unnatural sex with him.
Police have come to know that the boy left his home around 10 am on December 16 after his father scolded him for being poor in his studies. As he did not return home till night, his family members started searching for him and informed police. His body was found near the pond the day after with his throat slit.
“It was a blind and tough case for us as neither the student nor his family members had any enemies. Our personnel conducted a massive search operation in the vicinity of the pond near which the boy’s body was found. We also brought under our radar local drug addicts and anti-socials with hysterical tendencies,” said DCP (Cuttack) Pinak Mishra.
Police zeroed in on Panda after enumerating the family members of all the houses in the locality to check any suspicious movements. Police found that Panda was absent in the village for two days after the crime. Police also came to know that Panda often spent several hours on the rooftop of a cyclone shelter near the pond. Cops took Panda into custody for interrogation on Sunday evening.
Police sources said a vital clue (a firecracker) was found at the cyclone shelter during the search operation. During inspection of Panda’s house, cops stumbled upon the same firecrackers.
“Panda confessed to have killed the boy. He found the boy alone near the village school on December 16 evening. He took him to the roof of the cyclone shelter and had unnatural sex with him. When the boy opposed and threatened to expose him in the village, Panda hit the boy’s head with a wooden plank,” DCP Mishra said.
While the boy fainted and became unconscious, Panda went to his house nearby and returned to the cyclone shelter with the sickle.
