2,601kg of ganja seized in 1 year in Bihar, 5th highest in country | Patna News – Times of India

PATNA: The seizure of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, especially cannabis (ganja), has increased in Bihar, putting it on the fifth spot in the country from seventh last year, according to a Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) report – ‘Smuggling in India 2022-23’ – released Saturday.

ganja seized in Bihar

A former senior police officer, on condition of anonymity, said use of ganja increased in the state as youths got addicted to drugs after the imposition of liquor prohibition.
“This is a matter of serious concern. One can find youths in roadside shady dhabas, consuming ganja and other intoxicating substances. The state government should look into it,” he added.
According to the report, the DRI had seized 1,297kg of ganja in 2021-22 and the quantity of seizure more than doubled to 2,601kg in 2022-23.
Altogether 131 seizures were made in 2022-23 by the DRI across the country and 27.617kg of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances seized.
The DRI registered 61 cases involving attempts to smuggle narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances into India through airports and air cargo route. Out of 61 cases, 30 cases involved smuggling of heroin (237kg) into the country, 19 cases of cocaine smuggling (38.47kg), nine cases of hydroponic weed smuggling (181kg) and one case each of MDMA (2.15kg), methamphetamine (1.9kg) and pseudoephedrine smuggling.
“If the consumption of such substances has gone up in the state, raids and seizures have also increased,” Economic Offences Unit (EOU) SP Sushil Kumar told TOI.
“The department remains alert to check smuggling of contraband drugs, especially in the bordering areas of the state. It conducts raids at regular intervals on special intelligence inputs. Bihar has porous border with Nepal and Bangladesh. Most contrabands land in the state from these two countries. That’s why we have formed Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), which works jointly with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), DRI and other central agencies,” he added.
The SP said the consignments also come from Odisha via Jharkhand route and northeastern states like Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura. “We have launched a special anti-narcotics drive in Bihar to check consumption of such substances,” he said.
