HYDERABAD: A four-month-old boy, who was attacked by a stray dog on December 8, succumbed to injuries on Sunday night. The incident took place when the infant was asleep inside a hut in Shaikpet’s Vinoba Nagar. His parents, both daily wage workers, had gone out to work.
A stray dog, from a pack of three, entered the hut and attacked the baby while he was asleep, local sources said.He suffered critical injuries. When his parents returned from work, they found the infant in a pool of blood and rushed him to the Osmania General Hospital. “The baby suffered bites all over his face and hands. He was kept in intensive care and on oxygen support but his condition deteriorated on Sunday. Despite all our efforts we couldn’t save him,” said a hospital source.
Repeated attempts to reach an official of the GHMC for a comment on the stray dogs menace in the city failed.
Sharp rise in cases of stray dog attacks in city: Report
Meanwhile, reports suggest a sharp rise in cases of stray dog attacks in the city with the latest being earlier this month from Dilsukhnagar area where a six-year-old was chased and attacked by strays. When contacted subsequently, GHMC officials had told TOI that they have launched a combing operation in the area to corral unsterilised stray dogs. Around 20 of them were rounded up in the area, but all of them were found to be sterilised. They were subsequently released.
According to the civic body’s records, there are at least 60,000 unsterilised stray dogs in the city – 15% of the total stray dog population. Such dogs, it is said, are more prone to aggressive behaviour.
