Panaji: Alumni constitute the fourth pillar of any university, and Goa University alumni should come forward to freely contribute to the development of their alma mater, said a Goa Univrsity alumni professor, Ravi Fernandes, who is the director and head of the physical chemistry department at PTB, Germany.
He was speaking as the chief guest of the Alumni Meet organised by the varsity’s directorate of student placement and alumni relations (DSPAR).More than 135 Goa University alumni attended the meet.
Citing a biblical quote, he said, “Freely you have received, freely give,” and called on the Goa University’s alumni to support the institution.
Highlighting the progress made by notable national and international higher education institutions with support from their alumni, Fernandes said it is time for the Goa University alumni to tread a similar path and be the change agents for the state university.
He said there are numerous ways, monetary and non-monetary, through which alumni can impact the academic and research environment at the university, thereby positively impacting the lives of its students. He also appreciated the contribution of Goa University students at national and international level in varied domains and capacity.
Professor Harilal B Menon, vice-chancellor of Goa University, said that the alumni can play an important role in the university accomplishing its goals.
The formal inaugural of the meet was followed by a panel discussion that hosted notable alumni of the Goa University as panellists to invite suggestions on the manner in which Goa University alumni can contribute to the progress of the institution.
Developing an alumni portal and database, maintaining regular interaction with the alumni, suitable projection and appreciation of the success of alumni, launching courses and coaching for alumni, providing mentoring services to the students and raising funds with defined purposes were some of the suggestions received during the panel discussion.
Anish Albuquerque, CEO, Imperial Wealth Services, moderated the panel discussion with Rudresh Kunde, vice-president, National Stock Exchange, among others.
