Coimbatore: Christmas was celebrated with fervour and gaiety in Coimbatore as family and friends got together for a day filled with joy.
The celebrations set in on Sunday night, when they began assembling at the churches for the midnight mass.
All the churches, including CSI All Souls Church at Race Course, St Michael’s Cathedral in Townhall, St Antony’s Church at Puliakulam and CSI Immanuel Church, were all decked up with bright decorative lights to commemorate the day.
Special prayers were performed for peace and health among the people. Prayers followed in the morning too.
After the prayers in churches, it was time for family get-togethers where an array of dishes, including biriyanis and plum cakes, were relished.
The houses were also decorated with bright lights. Christians of the city shared those delicacies with their friends and neighbours spreading the joy to people of other faith.
A few chose to visit hotels later in the evening and enjoy buffets spread out exclusively for Christmas by the hoteliers.

Red Church to have members only entry for midnight mass
The St. Francis Assisi Cathedral, also known as the Red Church, has decided to restrict attendance to registered members only for the annual Christmas Eve midnight mass. This decision comes in response to the overwhelming crowds that gather at the church each year. The pass system, implemented last year due to the pandemic, aims to create a more comfortable and secure environment for church members. Non-members and visitors from other faiths are welcome to visit the church on December 25.
