Bhubaneswar: People across Odisha celebrated Christmas by offering prayers and lighting candles at churches on Monday.
President Droupadi Murmu, Odisha governor Raghubar Das and chief minister Naveen Patnaik wished people on the festival. “Merry Christmas to all! This festival of joy spreads the message of harmony, love and compassion. Let us recall the teachings of Jesus Christ and resolve to work together for the well-being and prosperity of one and all,” wrote President Murmu on X.
Das wished people of Odisha, especially the Christian community, happiness, peace and prosperity while Naveen wished happiness and prosperity and appealed for cooperation of the people to build a developed and empowered Odisha.
Sparkling Christmas trees, carols, gifts and cakes marked the celebrations across the state as sermons on the birth of Jesus and congregational songs were held in churches. Christmas celebrations went off peacefully in districts including sensitive areas of Kandhamal, Sundergarh, Koraput and Gajapati.
In the city, the aroma of home-baked cakes filled the air. Wearing new clothes, people across communities visited churches, met friends and relatives. Markets and malls were decorated in red and were abuzz.
