Kolkata: Gated complexes across the city were lit up with Christmas lights as residents’ welfare associations organised Christmas carnivals and food festivals within their premises on Monday to usher in the Yuletide spirit.
At South City, a carnival began on Saturday and continued till Monday alongside an annual cricket tournament for residents to celebrate the occasion.“Stalls were set up selling apparels and food. There were amusement rides for kids and a DJ music set-up. On Monday, we had the final of the cricket tournament. It has been one of the best celebrations we have had in a while,” said Manoj Gupta, secretary of the South City Residents’ Association.
At Silver Spring, the RWAs brought in horse carts from Maidan apart from distributing cakes, chocolates and setting up game corners for young residents. “There was music, food and lots of games for people of all ages,” said Rajesh Kumar, the RWA president.
At gated complexes like New Town Heights and Greenwood Elements in New Town, the entire complex was decked up in Christmas lights, stars and bells. They hosted cultural functions and community dinner.
“The celebrations here lasted for three days. Residents here participated in cultural functions and kids were engaged in street games and quiz shows as part of the event,” said Sameer Sharma of New Town Heights. At Rajarhat, live music and carols were played all evening and residents themselves had set up food stalls and music stations. “Selfie zones were set up and the entire complex was decked up in Christmas lights,” said Manav Mehra, the Siddha Pines RWA president.

Loreto House and Calcutta Boys School held Christmas assemblies and events. Scottish Church Collegiate School organized a two-day Christmas carnival. St Lawrence High School celebrated Magnum-II and had a Christmas celebration. St. Augustines Day School organized a carnival before the Christmas holidays. BDM International is hosting its annual concert. DPS Ruby Park held its annual sports meet. National School Games in Yogasana is being held.
