Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has imposed a Rs 2 lakh penalty on a contractor for not maintaining cleanliness in Mankhurd area and issued him a show cause notice. It has also filed a police case against unknown person for dumping debris illegally in the area.
BMC has initiated deep cleaning drive across the city on orders from chief minister Eknath Shinde, and has asked contractors providing sanitation workers to ensure cleanliness in their respective areas.
Additional municipal commissioner Sudhakar Shinde, during his visit to Mankhurd area, found the area from Mankhurd T Junction to Vashi Toll Naka unclean. On his instruction, action was initiated against the contractor and additional staff deployed to clean the area. The BMC also cancelled the leave of assistant engineer of M East Division with immediate effect to ensure cleanliness in the area.
The inauguration of BMC’s deep cleaning campaign in Dharavi marks the beginning of a series of cleanliness drives which will be carried out across the city over the next two months. BMC also aims to control pollution through the drive.
The campaign aims to address multiple facets of cleanliness, from road maintenance and waste segregation to removal of unauthorised hoardings and beautification of public spaces. The ‘deep cleaning’ campaign is scheduled every Saturday till January 2024, and will focus on thoroughly cleaning one section of each ward from 9am to 2pm. CM Shinde also participates in the campaign and interacts with volunteers, encouraging them to continue the good work.
The BMC said this is the first time they have implemented such a concept. It’s not only the roads, footpaths, roadside drains, public toilets, everything is being cleaned at the same time during the deep cleaning drive.
