KANPUR: A constable in an encounter between police and a history-sheeter in Dharni Dhirpur Nagariya village of Kannauj on Monday evening.
Constable Sachin Rathi, who was posted at Vishungarh police station in Kannauj, was hit by a bullet fired by the accused and died during treatment at a private hospital in Kanpur. Rathi, a native of Muzaffarnagar, was recruited in the police force in 2019 and was to get married in February. His brother is also a police constable posted in Kannauj.
Later, the accused history-sheeter Ashok Yadav alias Munna and his son were arrested after an encounter. The father-son suffered gunshot wounds in the legs and is undergoing treatment at Kannauj district hospital. The police have also arrested Yadav’s wife.
Police and PAC have been deployed in the village as a preventive measure.
Kannauj SP Amit Kumar Anand said: “Munna had over 20 cases of murder, robbery, dacoity and Gangster Act against him and was on the run after getting bail in a case.”
Police got a tiff-off about Munna’s presence in Dharni Dhirpur Nagariya village on Monday evening. A team from Vishungarh police station went to the village to arrest Munna. Teams from adjoining police stations were also called in as back up.
Police surrounded the house where Munna was present and asked him to surrender but he opened fire. Constable Sachin Rathi sustained a bullet injury and died later, the SP said.
Two pistols and a double barrel rifle were recovered from the house where they were hiding, the SP added.
