Mumbai: The police have rescued a teenager and her minor brother who were allegedly kidnapped from Naigaon for Rs 10 lakh ransom, on Saturday. They have also arrested the two accused from Mira Road.
The accused, in their early 20s, are friends of the 17-year-old girl. The police are investigating if the teenager had a role in kidnapping.
It was on Saturday afternoon, when the teenager and her seven-year-old brother had left their Naigaon home to buy some goodies.When they did not return, their parents launched a search. Later, the father received a call from his daughter’s cellphone.
The unidentified caller claimed to have kidnapped the siblings and demanded Rs 10 lakh.
The father, who runs a shop in Naigaon, approached the police. Three police teams were formed to track the teenagers’ cellphone.
The family waited for the kidnapper to call back and give the location where the money was to be paid. However, the kidnapper did not call back. The teenager’s cellphone too was switched off frequently, the police said.
By evening, the police tracked the callers to a residential building in Kashimira, from where they rescued the seven-year-old. The teenager was rescued from another flat in Kashimira.
The accused identified as Jayprakash Gupta and Vipul Tiwari, were nabbed from Mira Road. They told the police that they committed the crime for money and didn’t expect the father to approach the police.
However, the accused duo, when questioned separately gave contradictory statements. The victims’ parents told the police that they were not aware of their daughter’s friendship with the accused persons.
