Gurgaon: MCG commissioner PC Meena has directed officials to cover the secondary waste collection points with boundary walls within 20 days. He also directed the enforcement teams to check littering and penalise those dumping garbage on roadsides and in markets.
He also asked officials to hold meetings with the market associations to ensure that the traders don’t dump waste in the market and penalise them if found guilty. He gave these directions in a meeting held last week.
“The joint commissioners should ensure surveillance of the garbage vulnerable points in their areas. The staff should be deployed at these points and residents who dump garbage at such areas should be penalised,” said the commissioner in the meeting.
It was during Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar’s visit to the city last week, the CM enquired about the garbage collection point at Gurdwara road in Sadar Bazar. Meena had told him that the waste collection point gets around seven to eight heavy commercial trucks full of waste every day from the vegetable market. The commissioner had also told the CM that MCG already floated tenders to erect boundary walls to cover the waste collection points. The CM then enquired about the height of the boundary wall to which Meena said it would be eight feet high. However, the CM said that the height of the boundaries should at least be 25 feet high so that garbage is not at all visible.
A campaign will also be launched to penalise bulk waste generators (BWGs), said the officials. The penalty imposed on the BWGs will be linked with the water bills and will be recovered through the bills.
According to the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, the BWGs should have a composting plant to compost their wet waste and dry waste should be recycled. The BWGs in the city include condominiums, residential complexes, hotels, restaurants and other commercial units producing 50 kg or more waste.
