Coimbatore: A BJP functionary and his wife were assaulted by a five-member gang using iron rods at his residence at Mettuvavi near Negamam late Sunday night.
The victim, T Veera Krishnakumar Vadivelmurugan, 45, from Mettuvavi near Negamam in Coimbatore district, owned an earthmover.
While Veera was admitted to a private hospital in Coimbatore in the early hours of Monday, his wife Krithika, 38, was treated as an outpatient at a hospital in Pollachi.
Police said Jayaprakash of Kattampatti owned a tipper truck and was allegedly using it to smuggle and sell gravel sands.
Veera informed revenue department officials about Jayaprakash’s gravel smuggling. There was a previous enmity between Veera and Jayaprakash.
Last month, Veera went to Jayaprakash’s residence and allegedly assaulted him and his wife. Based on a complaint by Jayaprakash’s wife, the Coimbatore rural police registered a case of assault and harassment of a woman against Veera.
Four days ago, Veera met Jayaprakash and tried to convince him to withdraw the case. The Negamam police suspected that it was Jayaprakash who sent the gang to assault Veera and picked him up on Monday evening for investigation.
