Chennai: Even while an assistant professor of the Kalakshetra Foundation is being prosecuted in connection with a sexual harassment case, a former student of the foundation has approached the Madras high court alleging similar charges against a former faculty.
Admitting the plea moved by the former student who is currently residing in a foreign country, Justice G Jayachandran said: “The nature of the complaint is very shocking and if the complaint is true, then the perpetrator of the crime has to be booked.”
More particularly his illegal act of sexual abuse should be prevented at the earliest, he added.
“The typed set of papers containing certain information and the complaint gives an impression that there may be several other victims similar to this petitioner,” the court said.
Noting that the anonymity of the complainant as well as the person who has been accused is to be maintained, the court said, “hence, the commissioner of police is directed to look into the complaint.”
The commissioner of police shall make a preliminary enquiry on the complaint and if he is satisfied that criminality is made out, the regular case has to be registered and proceeded in accordance with law, the judge said.
“He shall also bear in mind that undue publicity of the matter to be avoided since it may derail the process of investigation. The Commissioner of Police shall appoint an appropriate Investigating Officer in this matter and monitor the enquiry as well as investigation followed by the enquiry and report to this court about the progress within a period of 60 days,” the court added.
The court then adjourned the plea to February 22, 2024.
