Pune: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation recently initiated a process to regularise unauthorised kiosk advertisements on electricity poles along roads in its jurisdiction to increase its revenue.
The number of such unauthorised pole kiosks had increased across the city and there had been no action against the culprits. It may be noted that the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) had started a process to collect charges for pole kiosk advertisements by floating tenders and allotting contracts, but the same was stopped two years ago.
PCMC deputy engineer Sandip Khot told TOI, “Earlier, PCMC used to collect charges for pole kiosk advertisements, but it stopped. Since then all hoardings have grown haphazardly. We have initiated a process again and accordingly, a letter was sent to the town planning department to seek clarity on charges. We received their confirmation letter two days ago and will proceed with it.”
Civic officials said the PCMC’s sky sign department has identified 40 to 50 roads across the city where these kiosk advertisements could be installed on electric poles. A separate tender was floated for each road, with charges differing based on the area, said an official. An average of 80 to 100 such pole kiosks could be installed on each road — which is divided into different zones. A kiosk advertisement of not more than size 2×3 was allowed to be installed on electricity poles.
The civic body’s earlier contract for pole kiosk advertisements expired in November 2021 and there was no new tender floated. Officials said a decision to start the same process for gantry advertisements was also being initiated and once implemented, it would generate a handsome revenue for PCMC.

Halt user charges collection: State to PCMC
The state government has directed PCMC to halt collection of user charges from residents, after local leaders and housing societies objected to it. The government had assured during the monsoon session on July 21 that the CM would hold a meeting with the officials concerned in this regard and had halted the collection of charges till then. The decision will benefit around six lakh households; around Rs32 crore will be saved from citizens pockets, said Landge. We demand that PCMC adjust this amount in the next years property tax bills, said Dattatray Deshmukh, chairman, Pimpri Chinchwad Cooperative Housing Societies Federation. No other civic body across Maharashtra recovers such a fee.
