Bengaluru: A midnight call from an employee of Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Ltd (KSDL) was instrumental to industries minister MB Patil realising the long-prevailing laxity among the workforce of the century-old factory that manufactures the popular ‘Mysore Sandal’ soaps.
Visiting the factory minutes after receiving the call a few months ago, the minister discovered that production was hampered with many workers sitting idle.Internal rift among the workers, allegations of corruption, and large-scale irregularities were the other morale dampeners.
However, timely intervention, multiple changes in administration, and production sans any investment over the past four months have resulted in a record production of over 4,000 MT of sandal soap, wrapping up a turnover of Rs 134 crore in November alone. The average daily production of soaps, detergents and cosmetics has shot up from last financial year’s 110-130 MT to 160-180 MT now, according to data from KSDL.
The company is now poised to clock in a few weeks a revenue of Rs 2,000 crore this financial year.
Determined to eliminate the hurdles to maximising production, the minister invited suggestions from the public a few months ago. He and a team of officials began an overhaul of the entire administrative and manufacturing system.
“Those who refused to fall in line were either transferred or suspended. Efficient workers from other units were brought in to ensure optimum production. Confidence-building measures were initiated among the workforce to inculcate belongingness and pride,” said Prashanth PKM, MD of KSDL.
“There was a slump in production during night shift because of the cavalier attitude of a few staffers. We worked on that part for several weeks and now, even night-shift workers are working on par with their daytime counterparts,” said a technical officer.
The company’s average monthly sales have jumped from Rs 115 crore in 2022-23 to Rs 131 crore in the first eight months of this financial year.

However, some residents are concerned about the lack of flood mitigation measures in the area and emphasize the need for canals to drain rainwater into the sea. Despite this, the development plan is seen as a positive step towards providing entertainment options for the local residents.
