Peace Deal With Govt Likely This Yr: Chetia | Guwahati News – Times of India

Guwahati: A tripartite peace agreement between the Centre, Assam government and the pro-talks faction of Ulfa is likely to be signed by this year-end, Ulfa general secretary Anup Chetia said.
“Our team has reached Delhi and the process (peace) is on. Very likely, the peace agreement will be signed before the end of this year,” Chetia told TOI.
Both Chetia and Ulfa foreign secretary Sasadhar Choudhury reached New Delhi on Monday and are likely to meet the Centre’s interlocutor, AK Mishra, on Tuesday. The duo is also likely to meet Union home minister Amit Shah later before signing of the accord.
Couple of weeks ago, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said the tripartite peace agreement with the pro-talks faction of Ulfa is likely to be signed this year-end or by January next year. He said the final touches are being given to the proposed peace agreement which will incorporate political, economic and cultural safeguards as well as land rights demands made by the group.
Ulfa was formed in 1979 with the objective of “restoring Assam’s sovereignty” before it split in 2012 and the pro-talks faction climbed down on its sovereignty demand.
Signing of a peace agreement with the pro-talks faction of Ulfa will be the biggest achievement for the government in terms of restoring peace in the state. Barring the Paresh Baruah faction, all militant outfits of the state have joined the mainstream.
