Jaipur: A tussle between residents of Malviya Nagar and Rajasthan Housing Board (RHB) over a park located in Sector 9 is on as the RHB officials are trying to convert 35-year-old park into a commercial plot.
The decision of the housing board came to light on December 22 when – acting on a request from the locals – the officials of the Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) Greater visited the park for some renovations.RHB officials – who have an office adjacent to the park – stopped them stating that in January 2023 the housing board had formed a proposal to convert this piece into commercial land.
“We had shifted to this locality in the late 80s when RHB built this colony. Since then, the piece of land has been demarcated as a park and we are using it at least for two generations. Now, suddenly RHB says that this park will be converted into a commercial venture. We won’t allow this till our last breath,” said Deepak Vyas, a local resident.
Shocked by the recent developments, the local residents also approached Kalicharan Saraf, the local MLA from Malviya Nagar. During his last tenure as MLA, Saraf had sanctioned a fund of Rs 6 lakh from his MLA fund to renovate the park. In fact, the JMC Greater officials on Friday went to construct the walls of the park that was to be constructed with the MLA fund.
Talking to TOI, Saraf said that he had unofficially requested the RHB officials not to take any steps on the proposal of converting the park’s plot into a commercial one until the new government is formed and the Urban Development and Housing department gets a minister.
“Once we get a minister, I am going to take up the issue with the new minister and sort out the problem. I have to find out what led RHB to submit a proposal to convert an old park of the city into a commercial plot,” Saraf told TOI.

Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) has resolved to introduce pay-parking to stop motorists who occupy public spaces and cause traffic obstructions. The areas identified for pay-parking are the old bus stand, an open space near the police station, and an area near Upper bazaar. Motorists in Ponda park their vehicles in these areas, leading to congestion and no space for other motorists. By implementing pay-parking, the council aims to reduce traffic obstructions and alleviate frequent traffic jams caused by the increasing number of vehicles.
