Chennai: Singing Ostrich, Like One Thousand Stars, I Wish, and Little Goat’s Songs are some of the Iranian books to be made available in Tamil at the annual Chennai book fair as the Tamil Nadu Textbook and Educational Services Corporation is translating 20 famous Iranian children’s books to Tamil.
These books will be the part of a collection of 200 translated books (from other languages to Tamil and Tamil to other languages) to be released in January.
“These Iranian books are capturing the children’s world. They are mainly pictorial books and easily readable. They will enrich our children’s literature. We have bought the rights of 20 Iranian books at the Frankfurt International Bookfair,” said K Elambahavath, director of public libraries.
English translations of these books will now be translated into Tamil.
Besides, other interesting books such as History of Metal, and History of Maths published by Russia also will be released in Tamil. The textbook corporation is also planning to bring out classics such as Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, Jane Austin’s Emma in Tamil under the retold classics series. The collection will also include 40 Tamil books translated into other languages.
All the translated works will be showcased at the second edition of Chennai International Book Fair (CIBF) scheduled to be held from January 16 to 18 at Chennai Trade Centre in Nandambakkam.
“So far, participants from 40 countries including the UK, USA, Canada, Brazil, New Zealand have confirmed their participation. We will host writers and publishers from 10 Indian languages including Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati and Bengali,” Elambahavath added.
For CIBF, the state government had trained 20 literary agents. “These agents will hold negotiations with international publishers and do follow-ups after the fair for translation of books from Tamil to other international languages,” said T Sankara Saravanan, joint director (translations), the Tamil Nadu Textbook and Educational Services Corporation.
The state government has increased its translation grant from 1.5 crore to 3 crore.
He said the fair also will have conferences on latest publishing trends, rights hub and sessions to introduce famous authors and their books from other languages. Tamil authors, publishers, students, and literary enthusiasts will be invited to the international book fair.
