Chennai: Dedicated light motor vehicles for driving tests will be provided by the transport department at all 91 Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) and its 54 units. So, no more relying on friends’ cars or pricey rentals to pass your test!
Chief Minister M K Stalin flagged off a line of compact hatchbacks on Tuesday which can be availed by applicants for clearing driving with an additional fee of ₹50.“The option to pay the fee online will be available from January 1, 2024. These cars will also be altered for the secondary control for motor inspector who would assess the drivers’ ability to handle the vehicle,” a senior official said.
Now, those who do not have a vehicle either hire them from driving schools to borrow from their friends. “Not everyone can afford the charges demanded by driving schools,” he said.
Since obtaining a learners’ licence itself requires clearance of an online test, the initiative will reduce the dependency on the middleman.
The state issued an order allocating ₹6 crore to procure vehicles for the RTOs in November. The order said that maintenance of the vehicles, which will sport a L board, will be vested with the respective RTOs.
Tamil Nadu driving school owners federation president R Muralidharan feared said this initiative will lead to new problems. “TN is already on top with the number of road accidents. This may make things worse. Driving schools follow a system to train people and there is a difference between getting trained by experienced trainers and by friends or family. Also, now touts will approach people to get licences,” he said.
