NOIDA: Farmers on Tuesday held a mahapanchayat at the Noida Authority office to demand that 10% of abadi plots or its equivalent compensation be given to them in lieu of land acquired from them for development projects.
Farmers from across 80 villages have been protesting over the issue for almost two weeks, and on Sunday, they started going door-to-door, asking others to join their demonstration at the Noida Authority office.
“For more than two years, we have heard several promises, but nothing has changed on the ground. Even if the authority approves this demand in its board meeting, it’s of no use until the government gives its nod. Our protest will continue till the farmers get their rightful dues,” said Sukhvir Khalifa, national president of Bharatiya Kisan Parishad.
Farmers have persistently sought 10% abadi plots or equivalent compensation for the land acquired from them since 1997. Their ongoing protest dates back to 2019, and in 2020-21, they staged a prolonged sit-in at the Authority office.
Consequently, in January 2021, the Authority sent a letter to the government in line with the farmers’ demands. Reminders were sent in March and October 2022 and in March 2023.
On Tuesday, the Greater Noida Authority approved 10% residential plots for farmers on developed land. Officials said they will now seek the state government’s approval.
