Flower Power: Sheetla Mata Temple To Turn 200kg Waste Into Compost Daily | Gurgaon News – Times of India

Gurgaon: In a first, authorities at Sheetla Mata temple have decided to turn floral waste into compost. More than 200kg of flowers are offered at the temple which goes up to 1,000kg during the festive season.
These flowers were earlier dumped behind the temple on the Sheetla Mata road. But now, an organic waste compost system has been installed on the temple premises.
The unit will process around 250kg of flower waste daily to 50kg of compost which will be sold to visitors at a price fixed by the temple board. This will help curb the pollution behind the temple and even keep the premises clean.
Similar units are installed at various temples across Delhi-NCR, but in Gurgaon, which is struggling to manage its municipal waste, this is being done for the first time.
According to the officials, bins will be kept at several places in the temple premises to collect the flower offerings.
The flowers and puja materials collected will be segregated before processing.
Methodical composting is a multi-step, closely monitored process with measured input of water, air and, carbon and nitrogen-rich materials. Compost made of flowers is rich in nutrients and nitrogen content.
The technique and machine used at the temple for processing waste can be used in residential townships and colonies as well since it is low cost and low maintenance.
The unit was set up by a state CSR Trust and was provided by the Federal Bank. SDM (Sohna) cum CEO of Sheetla Mata Shrine Board, Pradeep Singh said, “Every day the temple sees many devotees, so this move would not only benefit the temple and the environment but also encourage localities or townships to take up similar projects.”
