Kanpur: A constable was shot dead when a police team that had gone to arrest a history-sheeter came under fire from the accused and his family members in Dharni Dhirpur Nagariya village in Kannauj on Monday evening, police said.
In the attack, Sachin Rathi– a constable posted at Vishungarh police station– sustained serious injuries and died during treatment at a private hospital in Kanpur.
Later, the history-sheeter and his son were arrested after an encounter. The duo also sustained injuries. The police also arrested the history-sheeter’s wife. A heavy deployment of police and PAC personnel has been made at the spot. Superintendent of police (SP) Kannauj, Amit Kumar Anand said: “A case was registered against one Ashok Yadav alias Munna under the NDPS Act in 2009 at Chhibramau police station. Munna had over 20 cases of murder, robbery, dacoity and Gangster Act registered against him. He was absconding after getting bail in one of the cases.” Based on a non-bailable warrant issued by a local court, at around 5pm on Monday, Chhibramau inspector Jitendra Singh and Vishungarh police station incharge Parul Chaudhary had reached the village to arrest Ashok.
“As soon as the police surrounded Ashok’s house, he started firing. Police also retaliated. Police teams from Gursahaiganj, Saurikh, Talgram, Sakrava police stations and two platoons of PAC were also called in. In the meantime, the accused fired several rounds at the police team. In the firing, constable Sachin Rathi sustained bullet wounds. He was admitted to a private hospital in Kakadeo area of Kanpur, where he succumbed later,” the SP said.
The SP added that shortly after the incident, the police arrested Ashok and his son after an encounter. “Both have been shot in the leg and admitted to district hospital. Two pistols and a double barrel rifle were also recovered during the search of the house,” he said. According to doctors treating the constable, the attackers had used a 12-bore cartridge which caused a big wound. “After being shot in the thigh, there was a big wound, due to which the main vein supplying blood to the body burst. It led to a lot of blood loss. We repaired the damaged vein through surgery but at around 1pm, Rathi’s blood pressure dropped. This led to a heart attack,” said doctors.
Rathi, a native of Muzaffarnagar, was selected in police in 2019. He was set to get married on February 5. His betrothed is also a constable posted in a police station in Kannauj.
