Guwahati: The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) will seek candidature in four out of 14 seats in Assam in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, said party’s general secretary Ramendra Narayan Kalita.
Kalita told media persons here on Wednesday that considering the demographic pattern in the parliamentary constituencies following delimitation, the ruling AGP-BJP coalition will push hard to win 12 Lok Sabha seats in the state.
He said Nagaon, Kaziranga and Barpeta are the LS seats, which the AGP can win. Kalita added that the regional party is discussing with workers and leaders to put forth its willingness to contest in a couple of these seats on a priority basis. The AGP and the BJP are likely to sit together to expedite the seat-sharing deal in the next few weeks.
“We are discoursing about contesting from Kaziranga seat. Our organisation is quite strong in Barpeta too,” Kalita said. He said there is no clash with the BJP and other regional allies, but the AGP will strengthen its organisation in all seats to garner support for the coalition.
“We will try to get those seats where there is a high chance of winning for the AGP,” Kalita said. In 2019 LS polls, the AGP was offered to contest from Dhubri, Barpeta and Kaliabor seats but lost all. While Kaliabor seat no longer exists after delimitation, and a considerable portion of it has now come under Kaziranga seat, Kalita said winning from Dhubri (where Muslims will play a determining role) will be difficult for the AGP, but in Nagaon LS seat, the party has a better chance of winning.
“The ratio of minority and Hindu votes is almost equal in Nagaon. So, our coalition may win from Nagaon,” said Kalita, even as heavyweight Congress leaders like Gaurav Gogoi and Pradyut Bordoloi have sought candidature from the seat. On the other hand, the Congress insiders said minority voters will play a deciding role in Nagaon.
Kalita also took a dig at the Congress and its allies for “mainly focussing on the minority inhabited seats”.

Sarva Adi Dal to contest on all 11 Lok Sabha seats in Chhattisgarh
The Sarva Adi Dal (SAD) plans to field candidates in all eleven Lok Sabha seats of Chhattisgarh after playing a crucial role in securing BJP victories in three assembly constituencies. Despite a one-year delay in registration, SAD garnered 114,286 votes and performed commendably in a three-week campaign. The Christian community, breaking away from traditional voting patterns, supported SAD due to the Congress party’s failure to safeguard their interests. Instances of attacks on Christian voters and the fear of violence prompted votes for NOTA and influenced the decision of some to join AAP. SAD’s influence was evident in close margin victories for BJP candidates in Kanker, Keshkal, and Chitrakot constituencies.
