MUMBAI: The city crime branch has nabbed three youths from Vadodara in connection with a threat email sent to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) as well two other private banks demanding the resignation of finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman and RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das.
Based on technical evidence, unit 12 of the crime branch detained three youths – Arshil Iqbal Tapola (27), Adil Malik and Waseem Memon (35). Officials, however, said they will be arresting only main accused Tapola as the threat mails have been sent through his laptop and IP address. Police said the email was sent from a gmail ID created by him. Tapola holds a BBA degree and trades in the share market. The SIM card of the two other accused was used in the crime.
“The two other detainees are his accomplices who may have aided or abetted in the crime but have not admitted anything. We have handed over the accused to the MRA Marg police for further investigations,” said an officer. Prima facie, it appears that the three youths had sent the prank emails.
The RBI had on Tuesday approached the Mumbai police complaining that they received a threat mail after which police sounded an alert and carried out a thorough check of three locations mentioned in the mail. It also deployed heavy police bandobast across all important public places and tourist spots.
“We have planted 11 bombs at different locations in Mumbai. RBI, along with private sector banks, have executed the biggest scam in the history of India. This scam involves RBI governor Shaktikanta Das, finance minister Nirmala Sitaraman, some top banking officials and some renowned ministers of India. We have sufficient solid proof for the same. The bombs have been placed at New Central Office Building, Fort; HDFC Bank, Churchgate; and ICICI Bank Towers, BKC. These bombs will explode exactly at 1.30pm,” read the threat email.
The threat mail was sent from khilafat.india@gmail.com on RBI governor’s email id at around 10:50am on Tuesday.
