Bhubaneswar: Hardened criminal Raghu Biswal, 24, who was allegedly wanted in over a dozen cases related to highway robbery, dacoity, violence under the influence of alcohol and extortion, was shot at and injured by cops following an exchange of fire in Mancheswar police limits here in the early hours of Thursday.
DCP Prateek Singh said around 3 am, Mancheswar police received information about movement of two notorious criminals near Barumind road.A five-member team of Mancheswar police reached the spot and found two men on a bike. “When our personnel approached them, the duo fled. Our personnel chased them. The accused fired four to five rounds at our team near Baliyatra field under Mancheswar police limits. Our team fired back in self-defence. One bullet hit Biswal below his left knee. His associate managed to escape,” Singh said, adding that no policeman was injured.
Biswal was admitted to Capital Hospital and later shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack. Doctors have removed the bullet from his leg. Biswal’s condition was fine, police sources said.
“We have seized a 7.5 mm pistol and a bike from his possession. Biswal would be arrested when he is discharged from the hospital. His associate who escaped during the exchange of fire has been identified and would be arrested soon,” the DCP said.
Police said Biswal committed several crimes in Chandrasekharpur, Saheed Nagar and Capital police limits in the recent past. Recently, he snatched a chain from a woman who was riding pillion on a bike.

Khanna Police have busted 10 inter-state weapon gangs this year and found that many of those arrested were youngsters without previous criminal history. Most arms suppliers were from Khargone in Madhya Pradesh, while some were from Bhind, Dhar, and Burhanpur areas. The arrested accused were also from Meerut, Jaipur, Haryana, and Chandigarh. Members of inter-state gangs arrested in Punjab mostly include youngsters from the border belt of Taran Tarn and Amritsar.
