Kendrapada: The first track special court (Pocso), Jajpur, on Wednesday sentenced a 35-year-old man to 10 years rigorous imprisonment after holding him guilty of raping and impregnating a 14-year-old girl, six years ago.
The court also fined him Rs 5,000. In case of default, the convict has to serve an additional six months jail term. The rape survivor had given birth to a baby girl in October 2017.
The court also directed the Odisha State Legal Services Authority (OSLSA) to pay a compensation of Rs 7 lakh to the girl and Rs 4 lakh to her daughter .
The victim’s mother filed a complaint in the police station in August 2017 and alleged that her daughter was raped multiple times by Suresh Kumar Sahoo over a period of eight months resulting in her pregnancy.
Sources said when the girl told Suresh about her pregnancy, he threatened her not to reveal his identity as her unborn child’s father. It was only after her mother noticed physical changes in the girl, she was medically examined by doctors revealing an eight-month pregnancy. Doctors also refused to abort the foetus as being was in an advanced stage. Nine witnesses deposed in the case in court, said special public prosecutor Sailendra Samal.
