Mumbai police launch aggressive campaign against banned Chinese nylon manja in city following tragic incident on Vakola Flyover | Mumbai News – Times of India

MUMBAI: The drive has been intensified in the city to book the shop owners selling banned Chinese nylon manja after the death of the 37-year-old police constable whose throat was slit due to the loose kite string that was floating on the Vakola flyover on Sunday. The Mumbai police commissionerate has issued orders to all the police stations to track down shops that are involved in selling Chinese manja.
Two more shop owners from Andheri (West) and Kandivli were arrested by the Versova and Kandivli police respectively on Thursday for selling Chinese manja. A total of 42 manja reels worth Rs 22550 has been seized from the two arrested–Hitesh Patel (50) from Andheri (West) and Narendra Gupta (32) from Kandivli (West) on Thursday.
With this, a total of 21 cases have been registered in the city and altogether seven shop owners have been arrested till date.
Versova police arrested Patel from four bungalows after 12 Chinese manja reels worth Rs3400 were seized from his shop on Thursday morning. While Kandivli police arrested Gupta and seized 30 reels worth Rs19150 from his shop in the evening.
The duo has been booked under the Indian Penal Code section 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) and under the Environment Act.
“Police are taking regular actions against the seller and the user. We have appealed to the citizens to avoid using the nylon manja since it is illegal. It is a security hazard and life-threatening,” said Joint Commissioner of Police Satyanarayan Chaudhary.
