PANAJI: Goa has reported a total of 47 cases of the JN.1 variant of Covid-19 to date, state epidemiologist Dr Prashant Suryavanshi said on Saturday.
“All cases are more than seven days old. All cases were mild and the patients have recovered. None of the 47 patients were admitted to hospital,” he said.
Out of the 19 cases of JN.1 detected last week by the genomic sequencing lab at the North Goa district hospital, which is INSACOG certified, 14 were confirmed by the National Institute of Virology, Pune, Dr Suryavanshi said.
In addition to the 14, NIV Pune on Saturday confirmed the results of 33 additional cases of the JN.1 variant.
Goa reported nine additional Covid cases on Saturday out of 251 samples tested. All patients were advised home isolation, with no new hospital admissions. The state has reported a total of 118 Covid cases since December 1.
When asked why the JN.1 variant cases are high in Goa compared to other states, Dr Suryavanshi said there is more testing happening as well as more genome sequencing taking place.
