NAGPUR: A teenage girl and her younger brother were crushed under the wheels of a private truck transporting loose earth excavated from Bhandewadi dumping yard at Bidgaon Chowk, near Wathoda, on Friday at 9.15am. An angry mob set the truck on fire, vandalised a fire tender and also attacked fire brigade personnel.
The deceased – Anjali Saini (18) – was a second-year college student, and her younger brother Sumeet (16) was a Standard X student. The siblings, who hailed from an economically poor background, used to work part-time to fund their studies.
They were on their way to work on a bicycle pedalled by Sumeet. Anjali, who was seated behind, was holding their lunch boxes. It is learnt that Sumeet was to drop his sister at the cyber cafe-cum-online facilitation centre where she worked part-time. Sumeet worked as an apprentice at a garage in the vicinity.
On the way, a private truck tried to overtake the siblings but brushed past them instead, which threw them off-balance. Both Anjali and Sumeet fell and came under the truck’s wheels. They died on the spot.
A huge mob gathered at the spot soon after the accident. The mob started pelting stones at the truck and some among them set the vehicle on fire. A fire brigade team that reached the place was also attacked by the mob. The windscreen of a fire tender was broken in stone pelting.
The cops from Wathoda police station could neither stop the mob violence or bring the situation under control, said onlookers, who did not wished to be named.
Commissioner of police Amitesh Kumar mobilized forces from nearby police stations along with senior inspectors. Other senior police officers too reached the place but the situation remained tense throughout the day.
“Sumeet was passionate about vehicles and so had taken up an apprenticeship at the garage,” said one of his neighbours.
Former corporator Purushottam Hajare, who was present close to the accident spot, said local residents had been angry with the narrow, single-lane and bad road, which witnesses heavy traffic movement, especially big trucks and two-wheelers precariously moving alongside each other. “The locals had been repeatedly raising their voice on the issue, but no one paid heed so far. They vented their anger after today’s fatal accident,” he said.
Wathoda police have registered an offence against the truck driver. An offence was also registered against unidentified persons who set the truck on fire and damaged a fire tender.
