Coimbatore: Road fatalities have come down in the city this year. While 261 people lost their lives in 255 fatal accidents in the past 12 months in the city, 272 people had lost their lives in 263 fatal accidents in 2022. The number of non-fatal accidents have also dropped to 753 this year from 822 last year. While 865 people were injured in the non-fatal accidents this year, 939 were injured last year. City police commissioner V Balakrishnan said, “We have been taking various steps to bring down the number of fatal accidents in the city. Motorists should avoid speeding their vehicles in the city to prevent fatal accidents. They should follow the traffic rules as well.”

Muhammad Hairulzat Salleh, a Singaporean minibus driver with a poor driving record, was sentenced to four months in jail for causing the death of Satyadew Ramanuj, an Indian-origin motorcyclist. Salleh pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention. He will also be disqualified from holding or obtaining driving licences for eight years. Salleh’s past offences include careless driving causing hurt, failing to conform to red light, and using a mobile phone while driving. At the time of the accident, Salleh was employed by Aurora World, a company that provides chartered bus services.
