Bhubaneswar: After a gap of three years, Odisha’s tableau will roll on Kartavya Path during the Republic Day parade on January 26.
The tableau will be a fusion of tradition and modernity, capturing the essence of Odisha’s heritage craft village Raghurajpur and its artistic legacy.
The intricate craftsmanship, vivid colours, traditional art forms and vibrant atmosphere will be brought to life on the grand stage of the Republic Day parade with the theme of women empowerment.
“At the selection committee meeting everyone highly appreciated the replica. It is a moment of great pride for me that after three years Odisha’s tableau will run on the Kartavya Path. We have decided to showcase the rich cultural heritage and craftsmanship of the state and how women artisans of Raghurajpur village not only preserved it but also make it popular in the global market,” said Gajendra Sahu, eminent painter and in-charge of the design and development of the tableau.
The front of the tableau will have ‘Kandarpa Haathi’— an intricate and richly decorated pattachitra-style painting of an elephant with Krishna sitting atop. “Paintings by women will adorn the body of Kandarpa Haathi — that represents the unique pattachitra-style painting of Odisha — while the back of the tableau will showcase the legacy of handicrafts in Ragurajpur and how women artisans not only brought the village on the global tourism map but with their these entrepreneurial skill they are selling these handicraft products to customers across the globe through e-commerce platforms,” said Kirti Kishore Moharana, the lead artist engaged in construction of the tableau.
The tableau also portrays the story of how a tiny coastal village of Odisha became a major attraction of tourists from across the world through the traditional crafts of Odisha like pattachitras, palm-leaf engravings, wooden carvings, tribal paintings, paper toys, cowdung toys, Ganjappa cards and the unique crafts of bottle painting reusing waste bottles.
“Our team will include 30 artists both senior and young to make a balance of experience and swiftness of hands as we have around 20 days left to complete the tableau. We are very confident that the tableau will win accolades for the state,” said Moharana.
