Commissioner of police Amitesh Kumar told TOI: “Days ahead of the New Year, traffic police had intensified the drive against drunk driving and deployed teams across the city to identify and penalise those driving under the influence of alcohol.”
This year, barring one fatal accident, the night of December 31 remained peaceful.Most people used cabs to avoid drunk driving penalties, pointed out a senior cop, adding that higher penalties helped reduce such cases.
As many as 4,000 policemen along with nearly 300 traffic cops were deployed across the city on the eve of New Year. Police were deployed at 40 strategic locations to check drunk driving. These were the areas having higher numbers of pubs and bars.
According to traffic cops, the penalty for drunken driving as per the amended Motor Vehicles Act is Rs10,000, and the driving licence is liable to be suspended for three months. In 2023, Nagpur traffic police caught 885 motorists for drunk driving.
The police also focussed on cases of triple-seat driving, which increased manifold. As many 121 two-wheeler riders were caught and penalized for triple-seat driving.
Besides this, the traffic police personnel also issued challans to 1,152 motorists under various sections of Motor Vehicle Act.
