Haveri: The Haveri district police faced criticism for their low performance in tracing cases in 2023. Out of 557 reported theft cases, only 142 were successfully solved, resulting in a property recovery of Rs 2.97 crore out of a total theft value of Rs 7.90 crore. Challenges such as a lack of infrastructure and technology hindered efficient case tracking. The remaining 415 theft cases remained unsolved in the previous year. The police department held a property parade recently and handed over recovered property worth Rs 2.9 crore to the owners recently.
According to statistics, the police traced a murder for benefit case last year and recovered Rs 1.3 crore. Only four dacoity cases have been successfully traced of a total of 9 and recovered Rs 1.7 lakh and only three robbery cases have been cracked out of 13.
Interestingly, a total of 145 cases of house thefts at night were reported but Haveri police have tracked only 25 and have recovered property worth Rs 92 lakh. Low performance was registered by Haveri police in tracking simple theft cases, wherein only 103 cases were traced out of 371 cases last year. The department showed subpar performance in dealing with a few other cases too.
“We have been facing a lot of hurdles while tracking cases such as thefts and robberies. We did not have CCTV cameras in Haveri city earlier. Some cameras have been installed recently. CCTV cameras are crucial to track crimes in the city, but we did not have them for the past three years. The department also requires advanced technology akin to the ones available with the Bengaluru police,” said a senior police officer, who did not wish to be named.
Superintendent of police Anshukumar Srivastav clarified that Haveri police are putting on efforts to track all cases, especially thefts. “Due to defunct CCTV cameras, it is a bit hard to track cases. However, we will crack all pending cases soon,” he assured.
