Hyderabad: Amidst New Year Eve revelry, the city witnessed a staggering surge of over 3,000 cases of drunk driving on Sunday night. Armed with breathalysers, cops had conducted a special drive at several checkpoints spanning Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda commissionerates on Sunday from 8 pm to 3 am.
For cops and motorists, it was a close encounter of a different kind on the last day of the year.Spirited debates with cops and attempts to escape the police net unfolded as the night wore on and streets became a battleground between reckless merriment and law enforcement.
Chaos ensued in Cyberabad as 18 drivers defied the permissible Blood Alcohol Count (BAC) limit of 30 mg/100 ml. At one spot, a driver sealed his lips while feigning compliance, sparking a heated argument when confronted by cops. A woman stepped in to support the driver’s tactics. When the reluctant man finally submitted to the test, the reading revealed a BAC of 206.
Meanwhile, at Road No 11 in Film Nagar, a drunk driver protested the seizure of his vehicle “The government allows drinking until 12 am, but I was apprehended much earlier. How can they do this? I’m a youth and a professional driver. The police confiscated my vehicle. How can they?” he asked.
In Hyderabad police limits, 13 minors were caught driving drunk. Chandrayangutta had 66 drunk driving cases, followed closely by Nallakunta and Amberpet. Under Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills limits, cops caught 80 motorists.
In Cyberabad, Miyapur topped the numbers with 263 cases, while IT hubs such as Raidurgam, Gachibowli and Madhapur recorded 45, 86, and 98 cases respectively.
Rachakonda had its share of the night’s turmoil, recording 107 cases under Uppal police station limits.
