CHENNAI: Following the criticism over the promotion to ADGP (idol wing) Shailesh Kumar Yadav as DGP, the Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday announced it had taken departmental action against 17 police officers including Yadav based on the Justice Aruna Jagadeesan Commission for their role in the 2018 firing on anti-Sterlite protestors in Tuticorin.
The commission had recommended action against then Tuticorin district collector Venkatesh, south zone IG Sailesh Kumar Yadav, SP Kapil Kumar Saratkar and other police officials and revenue officials for the police firing resulting in 13 deaths.
“Besides, permission was given to register a criminal case against a police inspector, sub-inspector, head constable. Departmental action has been taken against one sub-inspector, one grade I police constable and a police constable under the serious offence. Three constables have also been suspended,” the state government said in a clarification.
It said the departmental action has been taken against then Tuticorin district collector Venkatesh and other revenue officials as well.
Police opened fire on anti-Sterlite protesters on May 22, 2018. The state government had appointed the Justice Aruna Jagadesan commission to enquire about the damages to public and private property.
The commission had submitted its report on May 18, 2022.
Based on the report, the state government gave Rs 5 lakh additional compensation for 13 people who lost their lives in the firing and the government gave one lakh rupees compensation to 93 people who were arrested during the protest. It also said the government withdrew the cases against the protesters except the ones shifted to CBI.
State government had also issued no objection certificates to people involved in 38 cases which are withdrawn by the government.
