Straw burning in Punjab: Yet another year of fire-fighting on paddy fields
A viral video of a group of farmers in Bathinda forcing an officer to burn stubble serves as a grim reminder of the persistent menace. Cases of paddy stubble burning in Punjab declined by 27% over last year, dropping from 83,002 in 2020 to 71,304 in 2021, 49,922 in 2022, and 36,663 in 2023. The Union environment ministry attributes this decline to concerted efforts by the state government, including providing more subsidised crop residue management machines to farmers and encouraging ex-situ disposal of straw through industrial linkages. The Supreme Court also held SHOs liable for disciplinary action for any violation in the area.
