Balangir: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday inaugurated the much-awaited Lower Suktel irrigation project in Balangir. The project was built at a cost of around Rs 3,000 crore across Suktel river near Magurbeda for the purpose of irrigation and drinking water supply.
Addressing a gathering, Naveen said, “It is the day when a dream is changed to reality. The project will begin a new era of agricultural prosperity and mitigate drinking water scarcity of the people of the region.” He said the project was included in the 5T initiative to expedite work, which resulted in early completion.
“I thank all displaced villagers for their sacrifices towards development of the district. I respect their contribution towards this mega project,” Naveen said. The foundation stone was laid in 2001 but it took more than two decades to complete it due to the resistance of locals and displaced villagers.
This project will irrigate nearly one lakh acres of land in 203 villages across Balangir and Subarnapur districts, benefiting nearly 80,000 farmers. Initially, the project was approved by the planning commission for Rs 217 crore followed by an administrative approval from water resources department in 1999. The dam’s major structure is 31 metres high with a 255m spillway. Pressurized underground pipelines are being used for the distribution system.

Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik plans to steal Ayodhya thunder with Puri project launch
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik is strategically countering the BJP’s political narrative by orchestrating the grand inauguration of the Jagannath Heritage Corridor Project in Puri. The BJD has taken away the possibility of playing the religious card from the BJP with its strong political message in the improvement of the Jagannath Temple and other shrines in Odisha. Patnaik has planned a series of activities, including raths to create awareness about the Rs 943 crore project. The government will reach out to all households in Odisha and is expecting a footfall of 5 lakh people per day during the inauguration. The government is also organizing a padayatra to Puri and has invited religious heads from 1,000 temples in India and Nepal. The project includes the creation of a corridor around the temple, reception center, cultural center, and car parking. The Naveen government is also improving amenities of other temples in Odisha. The BJP sees this as a desperate attempt to gain political benefit due to growing anti-incumbency. However, BJD MP Manas Mangaraj believes this is a significant effort to boost the state’s rich religious and cultural heritage.
