CHENNAI: South Chennai Lok Sabha MP Thamizhachi Thangapandian has written to Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan urging him to direct IIT-Madras to stop letting out rainwater into residential localities around the campus.
“Discharge of rainwater by IIT has been affecting 450 families living around the area. It is sad to note that the authorities have constructed gaps in compound walls of IIT to allow stagnant water to enter into residential areas. As a result, homes are surrounded by rainwater with dangerous snakes and rats fleeing via the water outlet holes,” the MP wrote on Wednesday.
The MP said the water entering in areas between Elango Street and Thiruvalluvar Salai Junction at Tharamani was taking 20 days to drain. She urged the minister to direct the institution to come up with a permanent solution.
