Ludhiana: Acting on the financial irregularities highlighted in an audit report, the office of Regional Transport Authority (RTA), Ludhiana has recovered pending dues amounting to Rs 90 lakh from commercial vehicle owners who had defaulted in tax payments.
Officials said that with the connivance of insiders, owners of various commercial vehicles had managed to dodge the department to get fitness certificates of vehicles without clearing pending taxes, penalties and interest amount.Besides, there were other violations too which caused loss to the state exchequer.
An official, pleading anonymity, said all these irregularities were reported before implementation of e-governance in the Punjab transport. Notably, the department has been offering online services since 2018.
‘Will intensify drive’
Regional transport officer Ludhiana Randeep Singh said, “An audit had highlighted the financial irregularities reported between 2015 and 2018. Acting on these findings, we have recovered Rs 90 lakh in the last three months and will intensify the drive to recover more pending dues.”

7 lakh cases pending before Bombay HC at year-end, 83 percent of them civil
At the close of 2023, there were over seven lakh pending cases before the Bombay high court of which over 83 percent are civil cases. Just over 1 lakh are criminal cases and over 2500 are PIL. The total pendency of cases includes over 1.7 lakh cases that are less than a year old, forming over 24 percent of the pendency. Of the pending cases, a little over 1.5 lakh are writ petitions, while over 2500 are public interest litigation (PIL) and over 1.2 lakh cases are applications for interim relief and bail applications are almost 7000.
At the close of 2023, there were over seven lakh pending cases before the Bombay high court of which over 83 percent are civil cases. Just over 1 lakh are criminal cases and over 2500 are PIL.
