Coimbatore: City police commissioner V Balakrishnan on Thursday instructed the traffic police to take steps to bring the fatal accidents down by 10% this year, compared to previous year.
As per the data available with the city police, 261 motorists had lost their lives in 255 fatal accidents last year, while 272 had died in 263 fatal accidents in 2022.
Police are also planning to conduct a meeting with the private ambulance drivers to admit the accident victims to nearby hospitals listed under the ‘Innuyir Kaapoom-Nammai Kaakkum 48 scheme’.
Under the scheme, the state government would bear the expenses of emergency care for all accident victims, if admitted to the hospitals listed under the scheme. There are 38 such hospitals in Coimbatore district.
“If two or more fatal accidents are reported in an area, we usually mark them as blackspots. We have asked ambulance drivers to station their vehicles near the blackspots. This apart, I have asked the city traffic police to take various steps to reduce fatal accidents by 10% from the previous year’s figures,” Balakrishnan said. TNN
